APPROACH
Our successful safety and health program is a result of the committed participation from labor, our subcontractors, suppliers, owner representatives, and S/S Constructors. Together we make up a united team focused on a safe work environment. It is our goal to work with owners that share our commitment to providing the safest and healthiest work environment possible for our workers.
Our supervisors are the leaders of our Safety team at the job site, and are responsible for accident prevention and the reduction of on-the-job injuries. To assist the supervisors in implementing and coordinating all safety, fire prevention and first aid programs, a full-time Safety Supervisor can be assigned to our projects depending on the size and potential safety hazards of the work. We believe that success in accident reduction lies in planning ahead. This is accomplished by development of a site specific safety and health plan and the preparation of a job specific hazard analysis to use in crew training, building of teams and the promotion of a Safety culture.
Substantial effort is made by S/S Constructors management to cultivate a positive safety attitude at every level. For instance, the personal protective devices provided to and required to be used by our workers exceed regulatory standards. Examples are: Use of class III full body harness with double locking shock absorbing lanyard; mandatory safety glasses; double eye protection mandatory when chipping or grinding; and use of back belts.
Our Construction Management Team, with the aid of the Safety Supervisor, is responsible for developing a site specific Safety and Health plan.
Our approach includes an extensive training program. All new employees are given a specific oral and visual safety presentation at the time of employment, along with a personal copy of our Employee Safety Handbook. Specific training for all employees includes, but is not limited to, the following subjects:
- Confined Space
- Fall Protection
- Hazard Communication
- Lock-Out/Tag Out
- Proper Lifting Techniques
- Personal Protective
Additional training highlights include:
Weekly attendance at site “Tool Box Safety and Health” meetings to encourage communication, cooperation, and to develop safe attitudes for all craft and supervisory employees is mandatory. Specific safety agenda's are provided.
We encourage all supervisory personnel to have current First Aid/CPR certification.
We provide continuous training for supervisory staff that includes hazard recognition, job safety awareness, job safety analysis preparation and many other job-specific safety topics.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING
S/S Constructors, has an established “Drug and Alcohol Policy” and testing program for all staff, craft, and subcontractor employees. The program was instituted to ensure a safe, efficient work environment for our employees, subcontractors, and clients. As a condition of employment, all employees are required to be tested for drug and alcohol abuse. Those individuals who test positive will be terminated. In addition, all employees involved in an OSHA recordable injury or near miss situation, are given a post accident test. S/S Constructors has implemented random testing.
